Precincts are closed. Results will be announced in a few hours after counting all the bulletins, but it is already clear that those elections will cause (maybe global) changes in the country:
- ruling party of president Erdogan (AKP) got less than 50%,
- Oppositionist Kurdish party HDP passes the required barrier of 10% and secures a place in Turkish Parliament.
- Istanbul — 46.8%
- Ankara— 12.2%
- Izmir — 9.1%
- Antalya — 3.0%
- Bursa — 2.9%
- other 278 cities and towns — 26%
According to the Turkish law, during the «Day of silence» before the elections, it is prohibited to publish any exit-poll or poll data, but… the Turks — heirs of the great Ottoman Empire and any prohibition only encourages people and agencies to make predictions before, during, and even after the electoral precincts are closed.
And using the «information influx» — is a standard eastern way of influencing the minds. According to Wikipedia:
Following similar allegations for the 2014 local elections and 2014 presidential election, the government have been accused of continuing to conduct a ‘perception operation’ (algı operasyonu) before the election through the use of disputed and fake opinion polls. The term ‘algı operasyonu’ has since become a common political term in Turkey, symbolising political bias within the media. Polling companies in Turkey rarely include a detailed breakdown of their operations and several poll companies do not have any official records of existence.
Many pollsters lack official websites and instead announce poll results on Facebook or Twitter, while some companies such as ‘Politic’s Communication and Research’ have grammatical errors in their names that place their existence in doubt. The CHP, MHP and even some polling companies themselves have accused pollsters of releasing deliberately misleading information.
The CHP deputy leader Sezgin Tanrıkulu proposed a new law that would inflict a penalty fine on polling companies that had margins of error above 5 or 6% and declare them ‘biased’. The proposed law would also impose custodial sentences on the companies’ owners of between two to five years.
